"A Chemist’s View ofthe Life of a U.S. Scientist, Past, Current and Future”
Susan Olesik is currently the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The Ohio State University, where she has been faculty since 1986. She is also the Director of the Ohio House of Science and Engineering (OHSE), a K-16 science outreach center. She received her Ph.D. in 1982 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in analytical mass spectrometry. She was also a postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University and at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She is well-known is the fields of science education and analytical chemistry. Her awards include: 2014 ACS National Award in Chromatography, 2012 AAAS Fellow, 2010 OSU Building Bridges Excellence Award, 2009 Carnegie Foundation Award for Wonders of Our World , 2009 Member of Inaugural Class of American Chemical Society Fellows, 2008 ACS National Award for Encouraging Disadvantaged Students into Careers in the Chemical Sciences; 2008 Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences; 2007 Dow Professorship; 2006 OSU Alumni Association Heinlen Award; 2005 ColumbusTechnical Council (CTC) Technical Person of the Year; 2004 Columbus Section Award for Outstanding Achievement & Promotion of Chemical Sciences at ACS;2 000 AWISCO Woman in Science Award; and a commendation from NASA.

Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) and ACS Webinars have partnered together to organize a "Date with Science". Connect with Guy Crosby of America's Test Kitchen and Sally Mitchell, a winner of The ACS James Bryant Conant award, as they delve into the chemistry of dinner and dessert. After the on-line 30 minute presentation, the subject matter experts will take questions LIVE from the audience. The event will take place on Thursday February 28th at 7:00 pm.

Please join us at the Civic Center for a seminar on the Chemistry of Wine. This event will include wine tasting, diner from Café Annice and a souvenir ACS wine glass!
The event will take place at the Lake Jackson Civic Center from 6:30-8:30PM. The cost is $10 for ACS members and $15 for Non-Members. Please have cash or check to pay at the door.

Our Guest speaker, J. Ernest Simpson from California State Polytechnic University, will be discussing The Chemistry of Wine
The talk will include an overview of wine and wine making and more detailed descriptions of the chemical composition of grapes and wine, laboratory methods for analysis of grapes and wines, sensory and organoleptic methods used for wine, the role of tannin and other phenolic compounds in wine, and some potential health aspects of wine. The event will start with a component tasting followed by a varietal analysis with a number of white, red and dessert wines.
