Over the past year, we have been preparing an update to the Brazosport Local Section’s bylaws. We did this because our current bylaws, which were adopted in 1992, were not consistent with the ACS bylaws, limited the application of technical tools for Local Section activities, and limited the efficiency of our executive committee. We submitted the preliminary updates to the ACS Committee on Constitution and Bylaws (C&B), who provided an excellent review and constructive comments. Now we require your approval to accept the updated bylaws; the process requires a favorable vote by two thirds of the members voting by letter ballot for adoption of new bylaws.
In these by-laws, we have updated general verbiage to comply with current ACS guidelines and national bylaws, along with:
• Section 4: Updated the section on members and student members’ privileges within the section. This was required due to the shift from student affiliates to student members at the national level.
• Section 7: Updated the yearly executive committee election process, including allowing the use of electronic ballots for all future elections in addition to paper ballots, for members who prefer to receive their ballots in the mail. This will increase efficiency during our annual election process and will reduce the number of printed packages prepared.
• Section 8: Update the descriptions of executive committee roles and responsibilities.
• Section 12: Addition of the section for the recall of elected officials.
This year, in addition to selecting new officers for the section, you will find a ballot to vote on the updated Local Section bylaws in your election package. Please review the document and either approve or reject the final bylaws document on the ballot. We will announce the results of these votes along with the winners of the local section executive committee election by the beginning of December, 2012. Remember, adoption of the new bylaws requires a favorable vote by two thirds of the voting members.
If you receive your ACS newsletter via email, you have received this letter and a copy of the bylaws electronically. You will also receive the executive committee election and bylaws ballot via regular mail. If you receive your newsletter via regular mail, you have received a copy of the by-laws in addition to this letter and the executive committee election and by-laws ballot.
Please feel free to contact the section at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any further questions.
