Introduction and Background
The Brazosport American Chemical (ACS) Local Section is hosting a crystal growing contest as part of the celebration of thehttps://www.iypt2019.org/" target="_blank"> International Year of the Periodic Table and to celebrate out Brazoria County Chemistry and Science Classrooms! This local level competition is a great hands on STEM experience to learn more about crystals and crystallization. During this competition, we ask all school students to grow aluminum potassium sulfate ('alum') crystals. Within this guide, there are suggestions and tips on how to grow your crystal. The judges will consider crystal size and quality.
This year, the Brazosport ACS is providing, free of charge, to the first 150 classrooms who sign up on a first come first served basis. The starter kits contain the starting material to make the crystal and some of the supplies to jump start this competition.
Please sign up at this link by January 15th to receive your kit:
ACS will contact teachers directly and kits will be distributed between Jan 15th and Jan 31st to area schools. The launch of the competition will be Feb 1st. Crystals must be sent and received by the ACS before April 5th.
Students and teachers win cash prizes for their school and will receive individual certificates for the Local Brazoria prizes:
