Dr. James K. Pierce, one of our valued Brazosport Local ACS Section members, is being celebrated for his fifty years of service to the American Chemical Society.
Dr. Pierce He graduated summa cum laude with his bachelors in chemistry from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri in 1966, and earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1970.
Dr. Pierce began his career at the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan where he assumed positions such as Research Chemist in Organic Chemicals Production Research, and Research Associate of Saran and Converted Products. Before transitioning into his role as Safety Engineer of the Michigan Division R&D in 1980, he and his wife Marcia gave birth to two sons, Jeffrey and Joseph. His career in Midland came to an end in 1988, and he traveled overseas to assume the position of R&D Director of Chemicals in Stade, Germany. He concluded his Dow career in Freeport, TX as Director of INSITE Technology Licensing before retiring in 2001.
Dr. Pierce has five granted U.S. patents as well as twelve different publications. He has been involved in the American Chemical Society on a Local, Regional and National level. He was the Chairman of the Midland, Michigan Section in 1985, on the Polymer Education Committee in 1986 and Director of the Brazosport Section in 1994. He has enjoyed a number of other activities over the course of his career including volunteering and operating his ranch in Floresville, Texas. Dr. Pierce currently resides in Lake Jackson and is a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. His contributions to our Society will be recognized at our 2018 Awards Banquet at the close of the year!
